Identifying Coins in the USA
When you're new to the USA it can be tough to figure out the value of all the coins you
carry in your pocket. You may find yourself staring at them, trying to figure out which one is
worth 10 cents and which is worth 25. Which coin is the brown one? And who in the world
are the people pictured on every coin?
|
The Penny
Worth only one cent, the penny is the smallest denomination of U.S. money.
It's made of copper plated zinc, and shows a picture of Abraham Lincoln, the
sixteenth president of the USA.
|
|
The Nickel
The nickel is, in fact, made partly of nickel. It's worth five cents and has a picture of the third
president of the USA, Thomas Jefferson, on the front. Jefferson's colonial plantation, Monticello,
is pictured on the back.
|
|
The Dime
The tiny dime is worth 10 cents. The thirty-second president of the USA, Franklin Roosevelt,
is pictured on the front. Like the nickel, it's made of a nickel and copper blend.
|
|
The Quarter
The quarter is worth 25 cents. George Washington, the first president of the USA,
graces the front of the quarter. It is perhaps the most useful of all the coins, because many
coin-operated machines, such as washers and some candy machines, will only accept quarters.
In addition to these coins you will also encounter Dollar Bills for $1,$2,$5,$10,$20,$100.
